Remembering the Rangers 1994 Stanley Cup Championship

--

An award-winning lawyer, East Rockaway, New York, native Marc Rovner leverages over the 30 years of experience to his role as a senior staff attorney for the multimillion-dollar title insurance company BETA Abstract LLC. Beyond his professional pursuits, Marc Rovner is a lifelong fan of the New York Rangers and was recently profiled in the Official Madison Square Garden Blog.

One of his greatest memories involving the Rangers is the team’s 1994 Stanley Cup championship. Up until that point, New York had not won a Stanley Cup since 1940. Led by head coach Mike Keenan and captain Mark Messier, the Rangers finished the 1993–94 regular season atop the Atlantic Division with 112 points. The team lost only one game in its first two best-of-seven series wins against the New York Islanders and Washington Capitals, but were put to the test in the next two rounds against the New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Canucks.

Trailing 3–2 in the series against the Devils and facing elimination, Messier guaranteed a win in Game 6 and followed through by scoring 3 goals in a 4–2 victory. The Rangers won Game 7 in double overtime with a score of 2–1 and secured a spot in the Stanley Cup Final. After letting a 3–1 series lead slip away against the Canucks, New York won Game 7 with a score of 3–2, with Messier scoring what would end up being the game-winning goal in the second period.
