Putting an end to a tumultuous offseason, the Mets announced former quality control coach Luis Rojas would take over as the team’s manager in January 2020. The 38-year-old is the son of Felipe Alou, former manager of the San Francisco Giants and Montreal Expos.
Rojas has prior managing experience in the minor leagues. He has been with the Mets organization for more than a decade.
Rojas originally interviewed for the managerial position in November after the Mets fired Mickey Callaway, but the team hired former Houston Astros player Carlos Beltran. The Mets and Beltran mutually agreed to cut ties in January after it was revealed that he was implicated in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal in 2017. Beltran wasn’t suspended by the league, but the Mets felt it necessary to go in another direction after he was prominently featured in the league’s report on the scandal.
