Loyalty to the Rangers Spans Generations for One New York Family

--

Attorney Marc Rovner of East Rockaway, New York, is an ardent fan of the New York Rangers. An April 6, 2018, article published on the official blog of Madison Square Garden describes just how far the East Rockaway resident’s enthusiasm for his favorite National Hockey League team goes: Marc Rovner has attended every one of the Rangers’ home playoff games held since 1978, and has attended a total of some 1,400 home and road games.

It all began in childhood, when he and his father, Errol, were whisked to the top of Madison Square Garden on a February evening as the Rangers played against the Los Angeles Kings. The elder Rovner’s favorite goaltender, Ed Giacomin, was on the ice, and the Rangers beat the Kings 5–1.

Love for the Rangers was already a family affair. Errol Rovner would send Rangers articles and scores to his brother, who was serving in Vietnam. After his father’s death, Marc Rovner and his brother continued to travel on the Long Island Railroad to The Garden to use the season tickets their mother had saved for them.

Today, the attorney can still quote numerous statistics from the 1970s to the 1990s, and mourns the loss of his extensive collection of Rangers collectibles and memorabilia to Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

But the family tradition of holding season tickets has never been broken. Today, they sit next to others whose love for the Rangers goes back generations, together maintaining a sense of community within The Garden.
