Eddie Giacomin — A Legendary New York Rangers Goalie
Having graduated magna cum laude from Boston University, Marc Rovner is an East Rockaway, New York attorney who provides real estate title insurance legal services. Outside of work, Attorney Marc Rovner is an avid fan of ice hockey and has been a rangers season ticket holder for fifty years. Attorney Marc Rovner with offices in East Rockaway, Oceanside and Manhattan, New York witnessed his first New York Rangers game at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 8, 1970.
During the 1970 Madison Square Garden Rangers game which Attorney Marc Rovner attended with his father Errol Rovner, goalie Eddie Giacomin successfully defended the goal against the Los Angeles Kings and led the Rangers to victory. Originally from Ontario, Eddie Giacomin began his career subbing for his brother as an emergency goalie with the Washington Eagles in the minor leagues and he earned the notice of professional scouts. In 1960 he joined the AHL Reds and gained a reputation as a workhorse able to stop the puck. At the same time, he covered extensive ground from the crease, chasing down loose pucks and passing them to breaking offensive players.
In 1965, Giacomin’s success led to the NHL Rangers trading four players to the Reds in return for his services. The investment paid off handsomely and by 1966 he had led the team to the playoffs and been selected First Team All-Star. His impressive stats included most wins and shutouts, and this began 10 years of consistent play for the Rangers in clutch situations.
It was Giacomin’s playoff grit that helped the Rangers pull off incredible upsets against league powerhouses such as the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens in the early 1970s. Having amassed a career record of 289–208–97, fan-favorite Eddie Giacomin was elected into the Hockey Hall of Fame and also had his number 1 jersey retired by the Rangers. Giacomin remained a favorite of East Rockaway Attorney Marc Rovner until his tenure with the Rangers ended. Giacomin was Attorney Marc Rovner’s father Errol Rovner’s all time favorite Ranger.
